The economic glory of many former coal mining communities in Appalachia has faded since the coal boom subsided during the 1960s. The social makeup of much of Appalachia has also changed and many small towns throughout the region are plagued with under-employment, broken families, dependency on government assistance programs, drug abuse, and educational needs.
