Culture-shock places tremendous stress on a marriage. As missionary couples struggle with homesickness, culture adjustment, language barriers, and illness, weaknesses in their marriage are exacerbated tremendously. Without precaution, many marriages fail.
While at H.O.M.E., a temperament profile is provided to each couple. A Certified Temperament Counselor then assesses each member's strengths and weaknesses and a personalized plan is developed for overcoming their weaknesses. Temperament is a person's 'internal DNA' and identifies their God-given natural tendencies. Knowing these, and learning to work within them, brings balance to individuals and their relationships. The mission field will have enough stress of its own; marriage issues which can be avoided, should be.
The condition of a marriage is not only important for the couple to know, but also for the sending organization. "Yellow Flags" or "Red Flags" will be shared with mutually agreed upon persons from the sending organization, so that they may be appraised of needs and ways they can help their missionary family most.
